Workshop 1 Details

On October 10, 2024, Arizona State University and Unlimited Potential hosted the first “Shade for ALL Neighborhood Workshops” with City of Phoenix Office of Heat Response and Mitigation for South Central Corridor communities at the South Mountain Community Center. Focused on enhancing neighborhoods through urban forestry, the workshop covered the benefits of trees, opportunities for neighborhood plantings, urban tree care, and developing Neighborhood Tree Action Plans. Participants engaged in interactive sessions, collaborated on strategies to create greener, healthier neighborhoods, and gained practical tools to drive change in their communities, leaving inspired to take action.

On November 14, 2024, ASU and Unlimited Potential hosted the second “Shade for ALL Neighborhood Workshops” with City of Phoenix Office of Heat Response and Mitigation for South Central Corridor communities, held outdoors at the South Mountain Community Center. This unique workshop featured interactive stations where participants could engage in conversations about key topics, including the benefits of urban trees, opportunities for planting, and strategies for sustainable tree care. The hands-on format fostered dynamic discussions, allowing attendees to share ideas and collaborate on creating actionable plans to enhance shade and greenery in their neighborhoods. The outdoor setting provided an inspiring backdrop, reinforcing the importance of community-driven solutions for a cooler, healthier future.

Urban Nature is a $5 million Justice40 Initiative funded by the USDA Forest Service Urban and Community Forestry Program, part of the Inflation Reduction Act. Led by the ASU Rob and Melani Walton Sustainability Solutions Service (RMWSSS), it has launched the creation of customized community forestry plans through a series of neighborhood-based workshops that put residents at the forefront of the planning process.
