On September 19, 2024, ASU and Unlimited Potential hosted the first workshop in the “Shade for ALL Neighborhood Workshops” series with City of Phoenix Office of Heat Response and Mitigation at the Muriel Smith Recreation Center in Lindo Park. The event brought together community members passionate about creating cooler, greener, healthier neighborhoods through urban forestry. Attendees learned about the necessity of shade in our hottest neighborhoods, the benefits of a greater tree canopy, the challenges of sustaining trees in urban areas, and the importance of developing and implementing a neighborhood and Valley-wide tree and shade strategy that contributes to public health and reduces environmental inequality. The workshop featured interactive sessions where participants explored priorities and strategies for enhancing shade coverage in their neighborhoods and left energized and equipped to take action in their communities.

The second workshop in the series in Lindo Park took place on October 24, 2024, at Spaces of Opportunity. This event offered a cozy, interactive experience designed to share the resident priorities and strategies we learned at Workshop 1 and foster deeper connections among attendees. Through hands-on activities and small group discussions, participants explored ways to make urban areas more resilient through increased shade and greenery and had the opportunity to learn more about upcoming paid learning opportunities into green jobs supporting urban nature and sustaining a greater tree canopy. The informal setup allowed for personal engagement and collaborative problem-solving, inviting community members to envision the future of shade in Lindo Park, connecting them to tree-planting initiatives in their neighborhoods, and engaging them in immediate and long-term tree and shade plans for implementation.
