Through community-industry partnerships, this initiative offers paid learning opportunities and paid internships in Spanish and in English for people interested in green jobs that sustain our urban tree and shade canopy. This comprehensive Urban Nature vocational program will include experiential courses, field training, stackable learning experiences, internships, and pre-apprenticeships that can bridge into long-term positions.

Summary: The “Growing: Seeds to Trees” pathway in urban forestry provides a comprehensive journey from the initial stages of propagation to the establishment and maintenance of mature trees. This pathway offers various roles and career opportunities within garden centers, nurseries, and greenhouses, highlighting the essential steps and skills required to support urban forestry.

Career Pathways:

  • Garden Center Roles:
    • Customer Service & Sales Transactions: Assisting customers with purchases and providing maintenance support.
    • Merchandiser: Creating and stocking displays, placing orders for the garden center.
    • Manager: Hiring, training, managing staff, overseeing safety, inventory, plant and facility maintenance, treating diseased plants, maintaining records.
    • Owner: Overseeing all operations, including sales, work, and business management to propagate, purchase, and sell trees.
  • Nursery Roles:
    • Nursery Worker: Planting, pruning, weed control, fertilizing, pest control, harvesting plants.
    • Nursery Production: Overseeing planting, pruning, fertilizing, and harvesting; directing shipping operations; training assistants; operating equipment.
    • Crop Protection & Equipment Maintenance: Identifying pests, developing control strategies, managing procurement and inventory, conducting safety training, directing assistants, and managing soil health.
    • Manager, Production & Crop Protection: Directing nursery or greenhouse production, managing HR in production areas, developing and managing operating budgets, and overseeing inventory.
  • Greenhouse Roles:
    • Greenhouse Worker: Planting, pruning, weed control, fertilizing, pest control, harvesting plants.
    • Greenhouse Production: Overseeing planting, pruning, fertilizing, and harvesting; directing shipping operations; training assistants; operating equipment.

Pilots & Partnerships

Our Pilot Programs & Partnerships initiative is dedicated to pioneering innovative approaches and fostering collaborative efforts to enhance urban forestry. By partnering with local governments, non-profits, educational institutions, and private enterprises, we develop and implement pilot programs that serve as models for sustainable urban forestry practices.

These pilot programs explore new techniques in tree planting, maintenance, and green infrastructure, while also addressing community-specific needs and challenges. Through our partnerships, we leverage expertise, resources, and shared goals to create impactful projects that promote environmental stewardship, economic development, and community engagement.

Educational Components:

  • Core Curriculum: Our training includes classroom instruction on urban forestry principles, tree biology, soil science, and sustainable practices.
  • Specialized Tracks: Participants can choose to specialize in areas such as arboriculture, landscape design, green stormwater infrastructure, and agroforestry.
  • Internships: Paid internships provide hands-on experience with industry partners, allowing participants to apply their knowledge in practical settings.
  • Certification Preparation: The program includes preparation for certifications such as ISA Certified Arborist, Sustainable Landscape Maintenance, and Arizona Certified Landscape Contractor.
  • Mentorship: Experienced professionals from the urban forestry industry provide mentorship and guidance to help participants navigate their career paths.

Classes:

Classes begin the week of January 20, 2025

The initial application deadline is December 20, 2024. Applications received after this date will be reviewed on a rolling basis.

Days and times for each course will be determined by the best availability of initial applicants. You will be asked about preferred days and times later in the application. Days and times for each course will be announced no later than January 3, 2025.

The class will be taught primarily in English. The staff is bilingual in English/Spanish. Some understanding of English is recommended.

Pay at $20/hour for up to 60 hours of expert instruction and fieldwork (up to $1,200 per participant) Personal tree equipment valued up to $625 per participant

Urban Nature, led by Arizona State University’s Rob and Melani Walton Sustainability Solutions Service — in partnership with community-based organizations, industry partners, national organizations, and several ASU departments — works to scale nature-based urban shade solutions, sustain a community trade school and enterprise hub, and advance place-based applied urban forestry research.
